PM must expand Cashless Card

Western Australian Senator Peter Georgiou has renewed his call for the Cashless Debit Welfare Card to be expanded to the Pilbara.

Senator Georgiou said while he was pleased the Prime Minister announced the Goldfields as the next trial region for the scheme,
it needed to be implemented further in WA’s north-west.

“After having campaigned for the trial to be introduced in Kalgoorlie-Boulder and surrounding towns, I am hopeful the Government will now allow for logic to kick-in and expand the trial to Port Hedland”.

“I have met community leaders from Port Hedland and by all accounts the incidence of alcohol, drug and sexual abuse is staggering” he said.

Senator Georgiou said the Cashless Debit Card scheme needed to be used as part of other measures to curb anti-social behaviour and welfare dependency but was still an important element in tackling the problem.

“While I’m sure there are critics of the Welfare Card, I’m yet to see these opponents provide a better or effective alternative.
